Cheatham Hill Tour for Civil War Buffs
From early May 1864, when Major General William T. Sherman's armies marched into Georgia, the Atlanta Campaign evolved into a series of maneuvers, as Sherman continually attempted to outflank his Confederate adversary, General Joseph E. Johnston. Penetrating deeper into Georgia, the campaign became one of entrenching, as the soldiers on both sides favored their shovels as much as their muskets. Civil War historian Michael K. Shaffer will lead a special tour of Cheatham Hill - scene of the heaviest fighting during the June 27, 1864, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Participants will meet in the picnic shelter parking lot, located at 902 Cheatham Hill Rd, Marietta, GA 30064. Wear safe, comfortable walking shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather. Tour will take place rain or shine. Each person will receive a map, which will assist in understanding this sector of the battlefield.
