Special event classes to learn something new, enjoy time with friends, and have a lot of fun!
Students learn drumming fundamentals including stick, hand, and bell techniques through playing iconic Ghanaian drum dances of the Ewe, Ga, and Akan peoples on authentic instruments carved in Ghana by master builders. In so doing, they will engage in true team musicking, where every position crucially contributes to the whole. The unique songs that accompany each piece enliven the experience. We are looking for enthusiastic students -- no previous musical experience is necessary. This camp is offered by the directors of Quadratum: Brian Parks and Catherine Moulton
Brian Parks holds advanced degrees in Composition and Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University and is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists. He has studied Ghanaian music with Abraham Adzenyah, John Dankwa, and Elikem Nyamuame since 2007. He has performed Ghanaian music at Yale University, the National Meeting of the Society of Ethnomusicology, and IRCAM in Paris among other sites. He co-founded Quadratum in 2019 to provide a pedagogical space for young people to learn comprehensive self-sufficiency through rigorous musics, unique expeditions, and direct-impact community service.
Catherine Moulton is a pedagogue and choralist working in Marietta. Her teaching strives to embody music theoretic principles through vocal technique, stagecraft, confident self-presentation, and the building of other critical life skills. Currently, she runs an active private lesson studio and co-directs Quadratum alongside Brian Parks. She has been studying Ghanaian drumming since 2017.
