This course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction in an online forum and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction that meets the requirements for Joshua’s Law.. The 30-hour classroom instruction and 6-hour behind-the-wheel instruction are conducted at separate times. Once the student activates the 30-hour online course, their name is added to a queue to await assignment to a behind-the-wheel instructor. (You may schedule your student's in-car lessons, if your student's behind-the-wheel instructor contacts you to schedule lessons prior to your student's completion of the online course. The two instructional components work hand-in-hand, one is not a pre-requisite to the other.)
The 30-hour classroom portion is intended to teach students fundamental theories and practices associated with driving a motor vehicle including, but not limited to, defense driving, car car/maintenance and car handling procedures. As this online course is student driven, students must be able to work independently and have strong attention, self-direction and test taking skills, as well as possess academic readiness and an understanding of technology. Students must successfully pass all Unit Tests and the Final Exam within three attempts to receiving a passing mark for this course. If the student fails to pass a Unit Test or the Final Exam, within the allotted attempts, he/she will fail the course. If the student fails the online course, he/she may purchase a new 30-hour online course, at a discounted rate, or attend a future face-to-face class for a second attempt to successfully complete the 30-hour course.
The 6- hour Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) instruction is one-on-one instruction that occurs on the road in an MCDE DDS-approved vehicle. This instruction is intended for students who have strong attention, intact sensory acuity and some experience driving a vehicle. As safety and competence dictates, BTW instruction includes Range Work, Residential Driving and Expressway Driving. (If student's instructor determines student is lacking proficiency behind-the-wheel, not all components may be covered to ensure safety to student, instructor and other drivers on road ways. Extra driving sessions are available for purchase as needed.) All Driver’s Education cars are equipped with an instructor side brake, extra mirrors and meet the requirements of the GA Department of Driver Services.
BTW instruction consists of three 2-hour sessions that are scheduled at the discretion of the student's assigned instructor based on instructor's and student's availability. ALL BTW INSTRUCTION IS CURRENTLY CONDUCTED AT THE MARIETTA COMMUNITY SCHOOL LOCATED AT 368 WRIGHT ST, MARIETTA 30064.
Upon successful completion of classroom and driving portions of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion for the 30-hour course and one for the 6-hour Behind-the-Wheel course. Completion certificates will be sent to the parent/guardian via email..
If your student has not yet completed the Alcohol & Drug Awareness Program (ADAP), they can access and complete this course online free-of-charge at https://dds.georgia.gov/adap. This course is required for all teens ages 15-17.
We also offer the Road Skills Test to eligible students seeking their Class D Driver's License. To be eligible, the student must have held their Driver's Permit for one year and on day, as well as have completed our 6-hour behind-the-wheel instruction and successfully completed a 30-hour Joshua's Law class.
